Peace, Quiet, and Critters!
Last weekend, my son Kyle, my grandson Carter, and myself rode in to my camp to do a bit of work and clean up some last minute jobs that needed done. It’s really dry in our forest right now, so we cooked our dinner using a Jetboil, two cups of water at a time. As a precaution, I set up the stove on top of my propane stove, well away from any burnable stuff. I’m actually a fan of Mountain House meals, but there are many other freeze dried meals and possibilities available. Anyway, while we were eating a late dinner, we were presented with a complete howling session by the local pack of wolves. This can be very unsettling for those who haven’t heard this type of serenade before. My six year old grandson had to trust us that he was going to be ok. It took lots of encouragement and confidence building, but he really enjoyed the experience by the time it was done.
My tent is actually a quite old wall tent, over 50 years, so we put a tarp over the top and built an awning with another tarp off the front. We cut a couple 8 foot poles and tying paracord to the corners of the tarp, we tied them off to stakes in the ground. This created a nice shady and protected area in front of the tent. Next week, we are going out to camp to spend a couple weeks. We like to use a portable electric fence for the mules and ultimately look forward to the peace and quiet of the meadow. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments…until next time.
